News and Notes

March 26, 2008
The river is now open to Hwy 13 and could be open all the way to the mouth by Saturday March 29th . Lots of large ice shelves remain which could hinder access at some fishing locations. With minimal precipitation forecast along with cold nights, expect low and clear water conditions for the opener.

Spring clean-up date will be April 26th. Meet at the pavilion in Brule for coffee and donuts at 9:00 A.M. and sign up for an area to work on. Lunch will be served at noon at the Round Up North in Brule. Lots of volunteers will be needed as we plan to make a concentrated effort to clean the ditches along CTY H.

The habitat appreciation dinner will be held after the next club meeting on Monday, April 28th 6:00 P.M.. Family Fun Day volunteers will also be included.

Catch and Release Fishing- At our February meeting the board of directors voted to endorse and promote catch and release fishing on the Brule river. This is not a change in the DNR regulations and is voluntary for anglers. Along with our habitat improvement projects, catch and release fishing can provide an inexpensive and effective tool to help maintain fish populations and enhance the quality of the fishery.

New Great Lakes Spawning
Fish eggs, or spawn from Lake Michigan and its tributaries, can only be used on Lake Superior if it is first preserved by a method other than refrigeration or freezing. To reduce the risk of spreading VHS to Lake Superior, we suggest not using Lake Michigan spawn at all when
fishing Lake Superior or its tributaries. Read The Article
